The warning, issued by Global Affairs Canada, says that “given the level of discrimination that exists in certain US jurisdictions, it is important for Canadians who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ), or other sexual minorities to be particularly careful when travelling to certain parts of the US.”
The risk comes from a variety of state laws and court rulings that allow, or in some cases even encourage, discrimination against LGBTQ people. In some states, there are laws that allow employers and businesses to deny service to LGBTQ individuals on the basis of their identity. There are also states that allow employers to fire people if they are thought to be LGBTQ.
Despite the risks, the Canadian government is still encouraging LGBTQ citizens to take precautions when travelling. They have provided a list of recommendations, such as researching LGBT-friendly restaurants and accommodations, avoiding displaying public displays of affection, and travelling with a SG/LGBTQ-affirming lawyer for legal advice.
Overall, this travel warning from the Canadian government is a reminder that even in this day and age, discrimination is still a reality. While it’s important to remember to be vigilant, it’s also important to recognize that many places in the United States are still welcoming and affirming of the LGBTQ community.
