Ex-Congressman Peter Meijer formally announced the launch of an exploratory committee to consider a possible 2021 run for the US Senate. If he enters the race, Meijer will be the fifth Republican vying for the right to challenge incumbent Gary Peters (D-MI).
Meijer was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2020 representing Michigan’s Third District. A veteran of the Iraq War, a successful small business owner, and a member of the Michigan Air National Guard, Meijer brings broad and unique experience to the table.
“When I first ran for Congress, I promised to be an independent-minded voice for the Third Congressional District,” Meijer said. “Today, I’m establishing an exploratory committee to determine whether I can effectively translate my beliefs and experiences into effective leadership on the state level – and ultimately, in the United States Senate.”
If the exploratory committee finds Meijer is well positioned for a winning bid for the US Senate come 2022, it will set off a series of dramatic events in the race – not least of which is the potential for a bruising and expensive primary, as several other Republicans were already running.
“This is a critical moment in Michigan and US history,” Meijer continued. “At a time when Congress and the White House are presented with unprecedentedly difficult challenges, I want to play a meaningful role in bringing our nation back together, reminding us that respectful dialogue is essential to a strong democracy.”
Despite his relatively short tenure in office, Meijer impressed Michigan voters through his thoughtful and independent brand of politics. In January of 2021, he became the only House Republican to vote in favor of impeaching President Donald J. Trump. The Congressman’s voting record also saw him receive accolades from both conservative and progressive advocacy organizations.
While it remains to be seen whether Peter Meijer fares well in the exploratory process, it is clear that a formidable candidate has risen up to challenge the current state of Michigan’s Senate representation. If he moves forward with a bid for the seat, Michigan voters can certainly look forward to an interesting race in 2021.
