Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un recently discussed military cooperation between their countries during a conference in Vladivostok, Russia. The two leaders also discussed mutually beneficial economic ties, as well as Kim’s endorsement of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
In their joint statement, the leaders expressed joint desire for increased security and cooperation between the two countries. Putin and Kim noted that their shared understanding on military matters would be beneficial to regional peace and stability, and that they support each other on “mutual security issues.”
Speaking to the press afterwards, Putin said that he and Kim agreed to “make efforts to strengthen military and technical cooperation” between their countries. According to Russian media, this includes the option of “joint exercises” between Pyongyang and Moscow.
Kim also declared his support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine, including its annexation of Crimea and its support for pro-Russian rebels in the east of the country. Kim’s endorsement of Putin’s policies makes it clear that the North Korean leader is firmly in Moscow’s corner on this issue.
The agreement may have also set the stage for further trade and economic cooperation between the two countries. A statement from the two leaders said that “A number of projects have been agreed upon, the realization of which will ensure a comprehensive strengthening and development of the Russian-North Korean regime of beneficial trade and economic ties.”
The meeting between Putin and Kim marks an important moment in Russian-North Korean relations, and is a sign of warming ties between the two countries.
