Kevin McCarthy, the House Minority Leader, has audaciously chosen to turn the impeachment proceedings into a political score-settling endeavor.
Rather than come to terms with the facts surrounding President Trump’s wrongdoings in Ukraine, McCarthy attacked Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for the duration of the hearings.
The President’s countless attempts to extort the Ukrainian government have resulted in impeachment, but McCarthy raised a series of questions, many of which had already been addressed multiple times during the hearings. His actions were a clear example of diverting the public’s attention away from the factual evicence of Trump’s wrongdoings.
McCarthy’s use of the proceedings as a platform to launch personal attacks on Pelosi was a sign that he was not taking the impeachment proceedings seriously. This not only implied he believes the President’s actions are excusable, but it also denigrated the entire process.
When the process of impeachment is so easily manipulated and turned into a platform for political score-settling, the significance of the process is significantly reduced. It’s a tragedy when the process intended to uphold the rule of law and protect the Constitution becomes nothing more than a game.
McCarthy has yet to understand that turning impeachment proceedings into a political score-settling will only delay justice and detract from the greater importance at stake. Rather than using the proceedings to settle petty differences, he should join together with Pelosi to properly bring about change in the political landscape.
It’s easy to forget the gravity and importance of the proceedings of impeachment. When political leaders, such as McCarthy, use it for power and petty politics, the people are the ones who are hurt in the end.
