At least 80 people were killed and hundreds injured in a drone attack on a Syrian military college. The attack occurred in the late hours of Monday, May 10th, 2021.
The attack struck the Al-Furqan military academy, located in the Syrian province of Aleppo. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an agency which documents the Syrian civil war, the attack killed 80 people and wounded hundreds more. It is currently unclear who is responsible for the attack.
Local sources reported that the drone strike had caused a “massacre” in the college, with large amounts of blood and destruction visible in the area following the attack. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the Syrian government was attempting to determine who was responsible.
The Al-Furqan military academy has long been a training center for the Syrian military. Most of the fatalities in the attack are believed to have been students and staff at the college. The remaining casualties are thought to have been nearby civilians.
The attack is the latest in a string of violent incidents in the region in recent months. In April, a series of bombings around Aleppo left dozens dead and injured. The city and province have been under intense pressure since the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War in 2011.
The international community has yet to issue a response to the attack on the Al-Furqan college. This latest attack has added to the growing toll of violence and suffering in Syria, and reminds us of the urgent need to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
