“Following the Mideast, Can Ukraine’s Zelensky Rekindle Western Support?”

Ukraine’s President Zelensky Looks to Rebuild West Relationships
As attention shifts increasingly to the Middle East, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is making a concerted effort to rebuild relations with the Western countries in an effort to restore stability and economic prosperity in the region.

In the midst of increased tensions between Russia and the West over the recent military action in the Middle East, Zelensky has been making a series of high-level visits to European and North American countries over the past several months in order to emphasize Ukraine’s strategic importance to the West. In particular, Zelensky has sought to emphasize the country’s critical role in energy security, and its potential as a bulwark against Russian aggression.

Zelensky’s strategy has been to engage with Western leaders to articulate Ukraine’s strategic goals and to seek support for them. On a recent trip to London, he spoke of how he “wanted to make it clear to the international community the need for Ukraine to be strong and prosperous in order to be able to secure its safety”. In particular, he has sought to highlight Ukraine’s importance in terms of energy security, as the country is home to one of the world’s largest and most advanced energy grids.

As part of his effort to re-establish Ukraine’s relationship with the West, Zelensky has made overtures to European leaders to restore the economic security of the region. In particular, the Ukrainian government has been keen to seek assistance from the West in terms of financial aid, in order to help finance the reconstruction of the country’s infrastructure.

As part of his strategy to improve Ukraine’s relations with the West, Zelensky has also sought to engage with leaders in the United States. In recent months he has held talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and the White House, as the US is the guarantor of Ukraine’s sovereignty as part of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum. The Memorandum, which was signed by Russia, the United States, Britain, and Ukraine, aimed to ensure the territorial integrity of Ukraine in exchange for its surrender of its nuclear arsenal.

In addition, Zelensky is also seeking to expand Ukraine’s ties with the United States by pushing for a free trade agreement and an improvement in political ties. On a recent visit to the United States, Zelensky underlined the importance of a free trade agreement as a way to restore economic prosperity to the region.

By engaging with Western leaders and emphasizing Ukraine’s strategic importance, Zelensky is making an effort to rebuild the country’s relationship with the West. Through a stronger political and economic relationship with the West, Zelensky is hoping to restore stability and economic prosperity to Ukraine, and to counter Russian aggression in the region.
