Nepal rocked by Deadly Quake: At Least 129 Dead, Homes Toppled

At least 129 people are dead and hundreds injured following a devastating earthquake that struck the country of Nepal early Saturday morning. The 7.8-magnitude quake struck northwest of Kathmandu, the country’s capital, and caused widespread destruction in the densely populated region.

The tremors could be felt throughout the region, shaking homes and buildings and toppling structures. The quake was felt as far away as Bangladesh, China and Pakistan. Its death toll could increase as many villages are yet to be searched.

The quake was centered 46 miles northwest of Kathmandu, near a densely populated region of temples, pagodas, and other structures in Nepal. For the capital, the quake caused much destruction as many buildings were weakened by its magnitude. Several people were injured due to collapsed structures.

Multiple aftershocks were felt after the initial quake, further worsening the situation by crumbling all already weakened buildings. One of the strongest aftershocks was measured at 6.7 on the Richter scale.

The Nepal Army released statements requesting people to come forward and provide help to affected families. Food, shelter and other essential supplies are already running short as many families now have to sleep outdoors in fears of further tremors.

Nepal’s Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has spoken to the media calling this a “national disaster” and has requested India redirect help and relief towards the affected families in Nepal. India is already sending in over 200 rescuers, doctors and firefighters to help with the affected families.

We urge everyone to donate to relief organisations in Nepal or India providing support and help to those most affected by this devastating earthquake. Together, with the help of everyone, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by this incident.
