The situation between Israel and Northern Gaza has reached a tipping point. For years, the two sides have been locked in a dire conflict, with neither able to secure a lasting resolution. Although Israel’s recent policy of tightened control has resulted in initial success, the longer-term picture is still unclear.
The past two months have seen a rise in aggressions committed by both sides of the conflict. In response, Israel has increased its presence in Northern Gaza, with increased restrictions and a construction of a new fence along the border. These measures have limited the amount of resources available to the residents of Northern Gaza, which have consequently only exacerbated existing tensions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that these increased controls on Northern Gaza are a necessary part of Israel’s effort to prevent any future outbreaks of violence. While these measures have seen some success in helping to contain the conflict, it is also becoming increasingly clear that they do not offer the means to a lasting solution.
The lack of a clear-cut post-war strategy is of particular concern to international human rights groups. Israel’s control of Northern Gaza has resulted in overcrowded encampments and further deprivation for its inhabitants. This has had a dramatic impact on the region’s economic development and has made it even more difficult for the populations of both sides to move towards a resolution.
Furthermore, the lack of a comprehensive post-war plan has hampered efforts to develop a sustainable peace between Israel and Gaza. A lack of economic aid and promises for improved living conditions have led many Palestinians to feel abandoned and neglected.
At this stage, it is clear that further action needs to be taken to establish a comprehensive and long-term solution. Negotiated settlement between the two sides is the only way to bring about such an agreement, one that takes into account the political, economic and cultural needs of each.
Until then, measures such as those recently taken by Israel’s Prime Minister will continue to provide only a temporary solution. In the end, it will be up to the leadership of both sides to decide on a lasting solution, and the international community must be willing to provide the support necessary for such a process.
