The United States Department of Defense (DoD) announced today that they have granted South Star Battery Metals (SSBM), an American battery graphite manufacturer, with a multi-million dollar grant to support the acceleration of domestic battery graphite production. This funding provides SSBM the resources needed to create battery graphite particles that are non-hazardous, small, and highly capable of energy storage and retention, as well as recharging capabilities.

Graphite particles created with this grant will have the ability to sustain performance over multiple cycles of very high temperatures, making them ideal for battery graphite which is used in electric vehicles and solar energy storage. Additionally, this grant will fund the development of the tools and processes necessary for domestic industry to be able to process graphite in the United States.
This grant offers great opportunities for both SSBM and the United States. On the global stage, having a United States manufacturer control the production, supply, and quality of battery graphite will give the US a competitive edge in battery production in many industries. Not only will this grant enable SSBM to expand production capabilities and quality, but it’ll also create jobs in the US for people looking to enter the battery field, as well as helping to stimulate our economy.
Domestically, this grant will bring current and future generations innovative and safer graphite particles. The regulations placed on US-based manufacturers will ensure that the safety of these particles is top-level, leaving American citizens protected. In addition, this grant will support the US’s efforts to further renewable energy resources by bringing battery graphite which can be integrated into renewable power sources like solar and wind.
The awarding of this grant to SSBM is a step in the right direction for the United States. Not only will it support US-based industries, but it will also bring forward safer and more efficient battery graphite particles for national and global usage. By providing funding necessary for domestic industry, the US government is ensuring that our country has a competitive edge in the battery graphite field and will be able to produce superior quality products.
