Amidst growing tensions between Israel and Palestine, the Middle Eastern nation of Israel has expanded its war in the southern area of Gaza. This is despite warnings from the United Nations (UN) that such a move would result in blatant disregard for basic humanity.
The latest conflict began in May when the UN called for an end to the blockade of Gaza by Israel. The blockade has resulted in a severe shortage of goods, medical supplies, and other services in the region. In response to the blockade, Palestinians in Gaza have launched a spate of rocket attacks targeting Israeli cities. In turn, Israel has responded with air strikes against what it claims to be military targets in Gaza.
The latest escalation of hostilities by Israel has resulted in increased destruction in Gaza. Over the past week, Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes, killing 110 Palestinians and injuring more than 800. Much of the damage has been inflicted on civilian areas, such as homes, hospitals, schools, and other public buildings.
The UN has already voiced concern over the situation. In a statement, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that, “Any indiscriminate attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure are utterly unacceptable, constitute war crimes, and seriously violate international humanitarian law.” He went on to reiterate calls for an immediate ceasefire between the two sides.
The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. With food and water shortages growing, and no end in sight to the conflict, there are fears of a humanitarian crisis in the region. It is up to Israeli and Palestinian leaders to end the violence and create a lasting peace. Until then, the international community must find ways to alleviate the suffering of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.
