President Donald Trump currently leads the Republican field of contenders for the presidential bid in Michigan by more than a 4-to-1 margin, according to a poll conducted by Monmouth University and released on Thursday.
The poll found that Trump has strong support from GOP voters in the state, garnering 53 percent support. His nearest competitor, former Massachusetts Governor William Weld, lags far behind with just 14 percent of the vote. Over a third of Michigan Republicans (36 percent) say they are still undecided.
The incumbent President also registered the highest approval rating among all the Republican candidates, with 65 percent of Michigan’s GOP respondents approving of Trump’s job as President. Governor Weld received the second-highest approval rating at 21 percent. No other candidate received more than single-digit approval.
The poll also sought to gauge the opinions of Michigan voters on Trump’s economic performance. Of those polled, 55 percent gave the President high marks, with 39 percent strongly approving. On the other hand, only 23 percent disapproved, with 11 percent strongly disapproving.
The Monmouth poll is the first comprehensive look at the Republican race in Michigan, one of the most important swing states in the 2020 Presidential election. The state is also home to the first nominating contest for the GOP nomination, taking place in late March.
The poll points to a clear victory for Trump within Michigan’s Republican Party, and suggests that no other candidate has been able to gain the traction necessary to threaten his nomination.
Barring any unforeseen changes in the primary race, Donald Trump is poised to win Michigan once again in 2020. It remains to be seen if, however, the President can keep this strong showing nationwide. The race for the White House has only just begun.
