It is finally here, the last meteor shower of the year: the December Quadrantids. This spectacular sky show is sure to be one of the most memorable events of 2021 and one that all stargazers should not miss out on. The Quadrantids will peak tonight, Tuesday, December 22, and this article will provide tips on how to see the show.
Firstly, take note of the viewing conditions for watching the meteors. Skywatchers should head out early in the night and will want to find a place that offers a clear, sky view with minimal light pollution. On Tuesday night, the Moon will set at around 8 PM, making the night ideal for a great visual experience.
Secondly, locate the shower’s radiant. Quadrantids are known for their strong radiant, which is an area in the northeast sky where the meteors will appear to originate from. Working back from the spot, you should be able to spot the constellation Bootes, which will appear to be the brightest star in the night sky. It is from this spot that the majority of Quadrantids will take flight.
Finally, find a comfortable spot and prepare to watch! Bring a warm blanket and be sure to set aside plenty of time (at least an hour) to watch the show. During this time, look up towards the northeast sky and enjoy the meteors as they streak across the sky.
When the show is over, be sure to share your experiences with others! As the last meteor show of 2021, the Quadrantids is certainly an event to remember. Even if you are not able to see the shower, all stargazers and skywatchers should spend some time looking up towards the night sky to take in the beauty of the universe.
