Christmas is a time of hope and love, and for a group of children in Ukraine this year it was no different. On December 18, 2020, children from Nemilkov, in eastern Ukraine, sent Christmas wishes to St. Nicholas in the form of a special plane made from cardboard and paper.
The plane, made by children aged 4 to 11, was launched twice. The children devoted a lot of effort and energy to making the “air mail” and also hoped the plane would make it to St. Nicholas in the hope of receiving his blessed gifts.
The first flight was successful and the plane managed to cover a distance of about 250 meters, but it ended up crashing after a few minutes after it was shot down by the local air defense unit. Luckily, no one was injured. The second take off, however, was a success and the plane flew away slowly, carrying the children’s wishes.
The story has been shared widely among local communities in Ukraine and around the world. It has proven to be a source of inspiration and hope as the region has faced war and conflict in recent years.
The children were excited by the idea of their Christmas wishes making it to St. Nicholas, no matter the risks that came with it. Their determination, courage, and energy should serve as an example to us all. This Christmas, we should remember that no obstacle is too great and no dream is too far away to be achieved.
