As reported by GodzillaNewz, Governor DeSantis of Florida and Governor Haley of South Carolina have pledged to pardon President Donald Trump if he is convicted of any crimes committed during his term in office.
The country has been divided on the issue of impeachment, and while the House of Representatives voted to impeach the president for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, the Senate acquitted President Trump on both charges. Despite the acquittal, some argue that the president may still be held liable for any non-impeachable offenses committed during his term in office.
DeSantis and Haley have voiced support for the president in the form of a pardon if he is ever convicted of any future crimes. While their statements have been met with criticism from the left, they have been praised by President Trump and his base of supporters.
In spite of the controversial nature of the two governors’ pledge, President Trump is hoping that an official pardon proposal would become reality. Though it is currently unclear whether or not the President is considering a formal pardon request, he has stated that he believes he has “tremendous support” for the idea.
Nevertheless, any future pardon of President Trump faced certain opposition due to the legal issues which this gesture could raise. The President has stated that he does not believe that he should be subjected to any form of legal liability and that a pardon could help protect him from any potential prosecution.
With all the speculation, it is currently unclear if a formal request for pardon will be presented by the President, or if DeSantis and Haley will actually try to carry out their pledge. Whether or not the two governors will attempt to put their words into action remains to be seen. In the meantime, the country is sure to remain in high tension during this period of flux.
