At least four members of the Catholic congregation were killed in a gruesome explosion in the Philippines, which occurred while a Sunday mass service was taking place. The deadly incident happened during a service at the gymnasium of the University of San Martin de Porres in Tarlac.
According to reports, at least 14 people were injured when the blast shook the gym at around 11 a.m. local time. Witnesses claimed to have seen fireballs coming out of the building where the mass service was being held. A rescue team was sent to the scene and ambulances were dispatched to take the casualties to nearby hospitals.
The cause of the blast is yet to be determined but authorities have warned the public against speculating and assured them that the incident will be thoroughly investigated. Philippine National Police Chief, Gen. Oscar Albayalde, said that they are currently painting together the pieces to form a picture of what may have caused the explosion. He added that all necessary means of assistance for the victims and their families would be offered and that an incident like this should not be taken lightly.
Apart from the casualties, several vehicles and nearby structures were also damaged due to the blast. The images of the devastation have been aired on national television and police officers were seen guarding the area while rescue workers helping injured victims.
The families of those killed in the explosion, as well as the members of the university community, were left in a state of shock. A representative from the Archdiocese of the region stated that the victims, singly or collectively, will be remembered in their prayers and that justice should be served for such senseless violence.
