At the United Nations General Assembly on September 25, United States President Joe Biden urged world leaders to remain committed to the support of Ukraine and its people who are affected by Russia’s aggressive occupation of the country’s eastern region.
His impassioned speech at the annual meeting of the Assembly demonstrated the United States’ commitment to supporting the people of Ukraine and their struggle for independence and liberty in the face of continued Russian aggression.
Biden began his speech by highlighting the importance of the U.S. as a supporter of global democracy and of the fundamental human rights of the people of Ukraine. He declared that the U.S. stands “in solidarity with the people of Ukraine against Russia’s efforts to undermine democracy and security.”
Biden additionally emphasized the importance of the U.N. in helping the world combat “one of the most serious and dangerous threats to the peace and security of our world—the systemic aggression of Russia.” He urged all UN member states to stay firm in their support of the Ukrainian people, saying that “all nations of the world must hold Russia accountable for its violation of international law, including the territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
The President’s remarks came as a relief to many Ukrainians who have experienced the brunt of the conflict, particularly those in the Donbass region of the country. Biden emphasized the courage of the Ukrainian people, stating, “The Ukrainian people have shown extraordinary courage in standing up to Russian aggression, in peacefully defending their democracy and rejecting corruption and restoring economic stability.”
In a stark message to the Russian leadership, he declared, “My administration will impose costs on Russia for its aggression in Ukraine and for its interference in our elections. We will continue to hold Russia accountable for its actions in Ukraine.”
Biden’s speech was widely welcomed by the Ukrainian people, who are still struggling to gain independence from Russia. His support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, and his pledge to come to its aid in the event of increased aggression from Russia, has given them reason for optimism. With the support of the United Nations, the future of Ukraine now looks brighter and more secure.
