A tragic incident on a honeymoon in Uganda has left a young couple dead and a manhunt underway to locate the suspects.
In the early morning of April 26th, 2020, Hungarian couple Ben manfred and his wife, Zarka, were attacked and killed while on the second day of their honeymoon in Uganda. The couple had just married in Hungary only two weeks previously and were exploring the Ugandan national park district before making their way to the Serengeti.
The Ugandan police are currently leading an investigation to find the suspected attackers and have identified two men as persons of interest. Witnesses reported seeing two men running away from the camp site were Ben and his wife were staying near to Lake Mburo National Park. It is thought that the couple may have disturbed the men while they were in the process of stealing from the camp, resulting in the attack.
The local press in Uganda have condemned the attack on the young couple, who were described as “warm and friendly” by those who knew them. The Hungarian government has also released a statement condemning the attack and expressing their deepest sympathies for the family of the two victims.
This tragic event serves as a reminder to travelers about the importance of being aware of local security risks and taking proper precautions when traveling to remote areas. Although most of Uganda is relatively safe, there have been several instances of muggings and theft in the past, and travelers should exercise caution when travelling to the country.
To express their condolences, the Ugandan government has set up a memorial fund for the couple that Citizens and charitable organizations can contribute to. Payments can be made through their website and a statement has been released confirming that the proceeds will go towards community development projects in the area, in loving memory of the victims.
The manhunt for the two suspected attackers is still ongoing and anyone with any information is urged to come forward. In the mean time, we mourn the loss of a young couple on the start of what should have been an exciting and incredible journey.
